Midlands Meander Print E-mail
KwaZulu-Natal Attractions

The Midlands Meander is the ideal way to meet the artists and craftsmen of the rural communities north of Pietermaritzburg. The route through the towns Mooi River and Howick is signposted and allows visits to many craft shops, studios, galleries and restaurants. Even though the Meander covers a relatively small geographic area, several days would be needed to sample all the highlights. Day trips are offered by several tour operators but unaccompanied visitors will be able to follow the routes quite easily. Maps are available from several of the towns in the region. The Meander boasts more than a hundred stops, which also include herb and flower farms, cheese markets and tea gardens. The Midmar Dam, Midmar Public Resort Nature Reserve, Howick Falls, Karkloof Falls, Craigie Burn Nature Reserve and the Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve are also indicated on the maps. As such a multitude of attractions can be quite overwhelming, the Meander has been split up into four distinct routes. These routes do not have specific themes, go through different, albeit very small, geographical areas. T1: Hilton, Merrivale, Howick, Curry’s Post, Karkloof, Mount West. T2: Tweedie, Lions River, Lidgetton, Balgowan, Nottingham Road. T3: Lion River, Dargle, Fort Nottingham, Nottingham Road. T4: Nottingham Road, Rosetta, Kamberg, Mooi River, Rietvlei, Hidcote.
